Market Today

Stocks closed lower as hot September CPI (3.7% vs 3.6% expected) kept the Fed path murky: the S&P 500 fell 1.11% to 7,718.94, the Nasdaq dropped 1.88% to 26,692.87, and the Dow eased 0.09% to 51,621.48. Semis took the worst of it for a seventh straight session — SOXL closed down 13.4% at 110.54, TQQQ off 6.0% — as CXMT chip-progress reports fanned competition fears; ASML’s record Q3 could not turn the group ahead of TSMC on Thursday. Banks split: Bank of America sagged on a $1.2 billion regulatory penalty while BlackRock rose on a Q3 beat. The 10-year held near 5.2%, the dollar stayed near an 18-month high, and Brent held above $105 on Houthi strikes against Saudi energy assets.

The afternoon Beige Book and Barkin remarks changed nothing into the close.

Benchmark excess (pp):

News & Model

Ananke is a rule-based trend system, not a prediction system.

The day’s model event: SOXL Trend closed its short at midday and went flat rather than pressing a seventh straight down session — the system banked the move and stood aside. SPY Trend’s SHORT still leans against the Strong Long Bias regime into the close, the standing tension of this tape. The models end the day defensive — one short still open (SPY), two legs flat.

Bottom Line

A CPI-driven washout led by chips; Ananke closes the day defensive — SPY Trend short, SOXL’s short banked at midday, TQQQ still parked.
