Thursday’s 8:30 ET data barrage ran hot across the board: September PPI up 1.3% for the month and 6.3% for the year — the biggest wholesale-inflation jumps since 2022 — with core PPI, retail sales and jobless claims all beating expectations.

Chips opened in a hole: $SOXL$ gapped down 11% at the open and CoreWeave printed a $59.51 all-time low, its credit still trading distressed with 5-year CDS near 1,000 bps.

The afternoon turned it around: rotation, not panic, took over — defensives and energy carried the tape while the AI-leverage names clawed back the morning’s damage, CoreWeave rebounding to close up nearly 6% at $69.69.

At the close, the Dow gained 1.08% to 52,177.69, the S&P 500 added 0.33% and the Nasdaq edged up 0.08% — all well off their morning lows.

Gold miners were the day’s runaway bid: Comex gold settled $4,147.70, up 1.54% and snapping a three-session skid, with $GDX$ up 4.34%; oil held its bid on the Hormuz shipping attacks, $USO$ up 2.44%.

Ananke’s rule-based read at the close: the 1:30 PM long flips on $TQQQ$ and $SOXL$ finished green as the bounce held, the $USO$ long since October 1 keeps compounding, and the $GDX$ short sits underwater on the gold run.

With Warsh speaking Friday ahead of the October 27-28 FOMC, does the afternoon’s rotation into defensives and energy carry into tomorrow — or does the AI-debt scare reassert itself?
